Program(s) affected: T1 Document created: 04 25, 2012
Tax year(s): 2011 Document last modified:
Version(s): 15.14, 15.20 Problem status: Pending

My client is a student in residence and when entering an amount under the RentPaid keyword in the Residence keyword group, the program carries that amount to line 6110 of the ON-BEN form. It also includes it in the calculation of the occupancy cost for purposes of the calculation of the estimated Ontario Energy and Property Tax Credit (OEPTC). Is this normal?

The amount entered under the RentPaid keyword should be the total amount of rent paid by your client for the period in the tax year where they lived in their principal residence in Ontario for 2011. If your client was in this situation, we recommend that you open a second instance of the Residence keyword group, select the option "Tenant" and provide the required information together with the amount of rent paid. In effect, you should not include any amount paid for the designated student residence under the RentPaid keyword as the occupancy cost for the part of the year your client lived in a designated university, college, or private school residence is set to $25.

Starting with v15.14, if you filed returns including an amount under the RentPaid keyword for a student in residence , use the keyword T1-Adjust to request an adjustment of the individual 2011 return. Provide the required information, and make sure to perform the following data entry:

Other-Line-No ON-BEN #6110
Old-Amount   $ "Enter the amount entered under the RentPaid keyword when the return was originally filed"
  New-Amount   $ 0.00

Details   The taxpayer was a student in residence

Note that in version 15.30 to be released in June 2012, the RentPaid keyword, for tax year 2012, will be removed from the Residence keyword group when option "Student in residence" is selected, in order to prevent this situation from happening in the future.
